In the dome

Emkhar-Tuur froze. That’s not possible...

What stood in front of her, approaching her—now slowly—was impossible. A colossus in a white spacesuit of unknown manufacture.

The sleeping god...

“Back, Methane!” she hissed, spreading her legs as her tail whipped wildly back and forth. She held her arms outstretched and her claws spread. She wasn’t a soft-skin; she was a Topsidan!

“Back!” roared her sister, who stood by her side.

The giant stopped two steps in front of her. Did he understand what they were saying?

“Chack-terr, io skono!” said the methane in a bright, shrill voice that was not at all suited to its huge body. He wagged both arms menacingly, which looked like the tentacles of one of those primeval octopuses that were sometimes caught in the depths of the oceans of Topsid.

She backed up. “Go away!”

A hand grabbed her—six fingers, she noticed—as she tried to dodge it. The other one snapped at her arm.

“Chack-terr, io skono!” repeated the Methane.

“Let me go!” She pounded his hand with her fist. In response, she felt the grip tighten.

Tisla-Lehergh jumped up to smash the sinister creature’s head, but the other arm plucked her out of the air and threw her to the ground.

“Wait!” she hissed.

The creature hadn’t moved an inch. It was also no longer squeezing so hard. It seemed to be...observing her.

Emkhar-Tuur did not lower her gaze. The Methane—hadn't this creature just been in hibernation?—towered over her by a good two claw spans. In addition, it was extremely broad-shouldered; almost one and a half meters separated the two arms from each other. An enormous mass that even Hisab-Benkh’s not exactly slender figure would have little to oppose.

“Kame zarr sapudaim!” Again, those incomprehensible words.

Emkhar-Tuur raised her free claw hand and showed it to the Methane: sharp and pointed. Then she indicated his arm. “I’ll slash your protective suit and then we’ll see how long you can go on like this!”

Did he understand? The chunky creature remained motionless. What was it thinking about?

She spread her claws.

“Kame zarr sapudaim! Io skono!” thundered the stranger’s voice. It was repeating itself, but Emkhar-Tuur could not understand.

Then its grip loosened, and it took a step back. Almost amused, Emkhar-Tuur noticed that the two legs were very short. They took up at most a quarter of the total size of the Methane, and its course thus appeared to be fluctuating and uncertain.

Emkhar-Tuur knew full well that this impression was deceptive. She had experienced the precision and speed with which a Methane could act.

She froze. The sleeping god seemed far more threatening alive than in the deep sleep from which the ward positronics had probably freed him. Strange and imposing, it loomed in front of her. She opened and closed her freed hand several times, turning it to check if and how badly she was injured. Everything was fine.

“Kame zarr sapudaim! Kame brezz sapudaim Again, it sounded extremely strange.

She exchanged a silent glance with her sister and then Hisab-Benkh, who watched everything as if frozen. Or was he just fascinated?

Tisla-Lehergh took a few steps to the side and then walked towards Ralv.
